My Kind of Guy - Pt 2

Rating: PG-13 for some mature instances
Summary: The main character wins a contest, getting to be on the crew for the Kaiser's filming of their tour. It's the Employment tour, influmenced by the Enjoyment DVD.

It must have been quite a sight: two tour busses pulled into the parking lot of “Vietnamese Delight”, and out piled the five Kaiser boys, five interns, and five PTB. The PTB went into the restaurant first and warned the owners about our entrance. They were nice enough to secure us a private room, only if the boys signed a menu for their wall.

We sat down at the table, with the PTB at one end, the interns next to them, and the Kaisers at the other head. I was sitting next to Ricky, acting as sort of the bridge between the band and the interns. We were talking aimlessly about sneakers, childhood soccer games, and male pattern baldness when Simon interrupted me.

“Why is it that you’re the only one who’s made any kind of effort to get to know us?” Simon whispered from across the table.

“What do you mean?” I asked from over my cup of tea.

“I mean, the other interns have sort of kept to themselves. Like, they talk to us and everything, but it’s been all fan-based stuff. Like how much they love us, when they saw us, and things like that. But you’re different, I’ve noticed. I mean, even here, right now, you’re talking to us like people, not rock stars or something.” I grinned and blushed, mostly from Simon’s little speech, but also because Ricky had just taken my hand under the table. We looked at each other, and we knew exactly why I was getting so close to the band. Then, as if by cue, the intern next to Peanut began engaging him in typical fan discourse. The whole band laughed, and Peanut just glared.

“This is….AMAZING!” I said over my dessert of ginger ice cream. In fact, the whole meal had been amazing, but the desert pushed it over the edge.

“I second that,” Nick said and patted Whitey on the back. “Thanks for the suggestion buddy.” We all thanked him, all the way down to the PTB.

“Lemme try some of that,” Ricky said, pointing at my ice cream. I nodded, scooped a spoonful, and fed it into Ricky’s open, waiting mouth. The whole band let out groans of disgust, and I just shrugged. Ricky made a yummy sound as he wiped his mouth, then smiled at me. The band stopped making noises and stared at us open-mouthed. It was apparent that they found out about us, even though we weren’t officially dating. We just liked each other and like to fool around together. This was short lived, though, because Ricky got out of his seat, got down on one knee, and took my hand.

“Will you go out with me?” he asked, looking up into my eyes. The band was silent, the interns were mumbling, and the PTB were trying to figure out the tip. I looked around at everyone there before meeting back up with Ricky’s cool, blue, penetrating eyes. I smiled, nodded, and told him I would love to go out with him. Our table erupted into cheers, but was quickly silenced by the owners coming over to collect the bill. Ricky pulled out my chair and helped me with my coat as we all left the restaurant.

As we walked out, making our way to the bus, an issue arose. We couldn’t find the bus. We were stranded in the middle of Massachusetts, I didn’t even know where we were, and we couldn’t find the busses.

“They’re over there!” Simon shouted and pointed down the road in the middle of a parking lot.

“I guess we’ll just have to walk over there then,” I said and we began our trek to the busses. We barely made it across the street before a crowd of indie kids spotted us.

“Ricky! Ricky! Over here!” one shouted and the group ran over to us.

“Should we run away?” Simon asked and got into sprinting position.

“I don’t think so, they probably don’t want to hurt us, since they know us and everything,” Chris, the editor intern said.

“Yeah, well Mark David Chapman asked John Lennon for his autograph before he shot him, so I don’t think that’s a valid argument,” I said. The boys looked at each other worriedly before looking back to the group of kids continually encroaching.

“There’s just enough room between us and them that we could get a running start,” Nick trailed off. Suddenly, the kids stopped dead in their tracks and a car pulled up behind them. A middle-aged woman was in the front seat and yelled something to the kids. They put up a protest, pointing at us, and finally hung their heads low and got into the car.

“Ah, good ol’ mum,” Whitey said and the car pulled away in the other direction. We continued to walk to the buses, and we made it there without any further incidences. The PTB piled into one bus and the rest of us into the other.

“Ok,” Nick said when we all got into the bus and it started moving, “we’re going to play a little get-to-know-each-other game, so I want everyone in a vague circle, right here.” Nick pointed a circumference around them and everyone sat down. I ended up on Ricky’s lap to save space. Well, we could have had the entire country so sit down on and I still would have sat on his lap.

“I do believe you are all familiar with Truth or Dare?” Nick said with a sly grin and we all groaned.

“Come on, we’re not in the sixth form any more man,” Whitey said, but Nick held up his hand.

“You were all complaining about how the new guys don’t let us know anything personal about them, and this is probably the more-fun alternative to ‘Two Truths and a Lie’.”

“Fine, but you start,” I said. “Truth or dare?” Nick scratched his head for a second.

“Truth.”

“Wimp.” Peanut quipped.

“Hey, I’m starting gradually.”

“Hmmm,” I thought. “If you could have anyone in the world, and I mean anyone, in your bed for a one-night stand, who would it be?” everyone was staring intently at Nick while he thought about this answer.

“This is completely off-record, alright? I don’t wanna see any of this end up on the DVD, ok?” we all nodded and Nick cleared his throat.

“She’s not famous, she was my neighbor for a few years back in Leeds –”

“Candice?!” Simon exclaimed, rubbing his hands together.

“No…” Nick said, then grinned like the cat who ate the canary. “Her sister.” The whole band erupted into applause, while us interns simply shrugged.

“Ok, ok,” he said and held his silencing hands up again. “It’s my turn now.” He scanned the crowd before pointing an accusing finger at the first camera person. “You, what’s your name?”

“Alicia,” she said nervously.

“Alicia, truth or dare?” she thought very carefully about this, And I didn’t blame her.

“Umm, I’ll take truth.” She said, playing with her hair.

“Ok then…. Which one of us would you most like to partake in a wild night of passion with?” she turned eight shades of red and scanned the group.

“Don’t let my current relationship deter you,” Ricky said and covered my eyes. “She’ll never know,” he said playfully and I pushed his hand off my eyes. I looked dow at him and he kissed me on the cheek.

“Actually,” Alicia started to say, “I was going to pick Simon, sorry Ricky.” Everyone looked at the bassist, who was turning as red as she was.

“This magic moment…” Nick started singing and everyone laughed, but we knew that before the tour was over, something was going to happen between them.

“Ok, pick someone,” I said and she scanned the room.

“Simon, truth or dare?” she asked. I couldn’t believe that she picked him. Even if he picked dare, she couldn’t ask him to do anything with her, it would be way too obvious. I was going to do it for her, but alas, I haven’t exactly honed in on my psychic ability as much as I would like to have.

“Hmmm, I’ll keep the pattern going and say truth.”

“You’re all a bunch of pansies, you are,” Ricky said and tightened his grip around my waist.

“Hey,” Simon said, pointing at him, “you shut up.” Everyone laughed and Alicia cleared her throat.

“Umm… my question…is…erm…” I knew where she was going with this. I changed my mind about her, she knew what she was doing.

“Will you go out with me?” she finished. Everyone looked from her to Simon, back to her, and repeated this for about a minute because that’s how long it took him to decide.

“Yeah, I’ll og out with you.” The bus cheered again, and Nick buried his face in his hands.

“This game was supposed to be used to get to know people!”

“Well, I hate to inform you, but you picked the one game that causes the most hook-ups other than Twister, so what do you expect?” I said.

“Ugh, good point. Hey, Simon, pick someone.” He looked around the circle for a little while, then pointed at me.

“You, truth or dare?”

“Like you need to ask, we all know she’s going to pick truth like everyone else,” Peanut said.

“Dare.”

“See? She picked – hey! She picked dare!” everyone stared right at me. I knew it was a stupid thing to do, given the nature of the previous questions asked. But hey, how many other times do I get to play Truth or Dare with my favorite band?

“Ok…here it goes…”

My Kind of Guy - Pt 1

Rating: PG-13 for some mature instances
Summary: The main character wins a contest, getting to be on the crew for the Kaiser's filming of their tour. It's the Employment tour, influmenced by the Enjoyment DVD.

I was sitting at my desk in my Scriptwriting class at Emerson College when there was a knock on the door. The teacher went over to open it and the whole class watched in curiosity to see who was there. Once it was opened, a young, medium-height man walked through the door. He wasn’t my type, so I went back to my writing. When I heard him say my name, however, I immediately looked over. When my teacher pointed to my meek little seat in the middle of the room, I knew something was up. My thoughts were solidified when our eyes met and he motioned me to the front of the room. I slowly got up, leaving my things except my purse on my desk, and walked to the two men. My teacher introduced me to the man, and vice versa.

“Do you remember the piece you turned in to Universal four months ago? The competition to be on the crew for the Road Diary DVD of the Kaiser Chiefs?” the man asked me. I nodded suspiciously. Of course I remembered my audition piece…..

*****

I set up my tripod, fixed my hair in the mirror, and pushed record. I attempted to gracefully, but quickly, get in front of the camera. When I managed to, I flashed a smile and started my presentation. I introduced myself, and began listing the reasons why I should be on the production crew for the Kaiser Chief’s newest DVD. They were looking for five potential crew people: two camera operators, one editor, one producer/writer, and one director. I was aiming high for the director, but I would have taken anything. In addition to why I should be on the crew, I also added in my experience on the road, since this DVD was going to be shot entirely on their upcoming tour.

I finished my speech, thanked them for their time, and shut off the camera. After taking out the tape, putting it in the envelope, addressing it, and mailing it, all I could do was hope and wait.

*****

the man laughed. It must have been out of my shyness, because his next move was his hand on my shoulder. He then turned to my class and informed them of my efforts. When he finished he turned to face me.

“I bet you’re wondering why I’m hear talking to you aren’t you?” I squeaked out a yes, which was quite the effort since it had finally donned on me what was going on.

“Well,” he started to say before the door to the classroom burst open, and five blurs of people ran inside. They ran up to me, at full speed, but managed to stop before they crashed in to me. When they stopped, I finally got a good look at who they were, and it almost knocked me off my feet.

“Boys, I thought I told you to wait until I opened the door!” he said. The five men looked around, mumbled the occasional sorry, and all I could do was stand there with my mouth agape.

“Well, I guess you already know who these five numbskulls are,” he said to you, and you could only nod. Standing in front of you was the boys of the Kaiser Chiefs. The whole room was mumbling to one another, since it was obvious that I had won the contest. I didn’t even listen to the man from Universal when he told me I won, I figured that one out already.

*****

I went over to my dorm room as soon as class was done to start packing. More representatives of the band came into the class after I finished freaking out on the inside. They basically told me that they had already worked out a grading system with my teachers: if I went through to the end of this project, I would pass all of my filming classes. However, if I fail, I would fail the classes (go figure). My other classes would be covered by a once-a-week tutoring system. It was a three-month tour, so I would be missing two half semesters. As I was throwing all of my pants into my suitcase my phone rang. I stumbled over thrown-about clothes and dove onto my bed to answer it.

“Hello?”

“Oh my god! No pun intended, but I heard about your contest! Congratulations!” it was my sister.

“how did you hear about it so quickly?” I asked.

“NME put it on its site literally minutes after you were told. Apparently you were the last one they needed to tell, so once they got word you were informed, the story went up.”

“Oh wow, they don’t waste any time do they?” we both laughed, then I realized we were due to head out in the morning, so I needed to finish packing. I said bye to my sister and hung up the phone. I went back to my packing, then before I knew it, my head hit the pillow and I was asleep.

*****

there was a heavy pounding on my door at exactly noon. I put down my hair brush and opened the door. I was promptly knocked down by someone, while other people charged into my room and began jumping on my bed. If it weren’t for this childish act, I would have thought I was being broken into. When I looked down at the man who had landed on me, I gazed right into the blue-green eyes of none other than Ricky Wilson.

“hello love”, he said and rolled off me. Once he had, he got up and extended his hand out to me. I gladly took it, was hoisted up, and collided chests with him. We both chuckled and stepped back. I had completely forgotten that the rest of the band was jumping on my bed, but the sound of a loud bang brought me to this realization. I spun around to my bed to find that the frame came separated and the mattress fell down. The guys stopped jumping and put on their best “uh-oh” faces. I shook my head and helped them down.

“It’s ok, I know how to fix it, it’s happened before.” As soon as I said that, my dorm room was filled with “oohs” and “aahs”. I blushed, and tried to explain that wasn’t how it happened. However, they weren’t having any of it.

“No, really. I just decided to flop into bed and the frame broke,” I explained, pushing it back together. I got back up and saw that the boys were going through my things in the dorm.

“hey! Put that down!” I exclaimed as I saw Ricky poking around in my underwear drawer.

“Oh come on,” he said putting on his best puppy-eyed face. “I promise I’m not going to steal any of your knickers and sniff them like some perv.”

“There’s nothing in there anyway, it’s all in my suitcase.” Ricky frowned and pushed the drawer back in.

“Well,” Nick said, “if you’re ready to go, we’ll help you with your suitcase and we’ll head out to the bus.” I nodded and the guys all reached for something to carry. As soon as we made it to the stairs, a cluster of girls were walking in the opposite direction. They took one look at the boys and started getting very fan girlish.

“Can I please have your autograph Ricky?” one asked and held out a pad of paper. He put down my suitcase and signed the paper as the other girls looked on giggling. They ran away quickly after he handed back the paper and Ricky picked the suitcase back up. We made it out to the bus without any more incidents and the driver took my luggage and loaded it into the bus. I had never stepped onto a tour bus before, and it was quite a sight. The front half of the bus had tables and chairs, while the back was filled with bunk beds and a bathroom. There was a tiny kitchen, and I mean tiny, but otherwise it was very plain. They had two of these busses, one would hold all the powers that be, and the other would hold the Kaisers and us, the winners.

“I want to have all of you winners gather around up here,” one of the Powers that Be (here after knows as PTB) said, and we all formed a cluster around one of the tables.

“Now, there are five of you here, and I know that all of you auditioned for the general part of being here. This is when we pick which of you will be doing what parts for the rest of the tour.” I felt my heart go into my throat. This was the make or break moment: I could hit my goal and be the director, or I could hit my low and get stuck on camera. Now, don’t get me wrong, I had no problem with camera. However, I was a natural-born director. And as the PTB was going through our names, assigning roles, I was on the edge of my seat. By the time he reached the producer, it was mine and another boy’s name. when he was called, I realized there was only one spot left: director. When he called my name, I couldn’t help but grin from ear to ear. I looked around and my eyes met Ricky’s. his cool blue eyes went right through me before he smiled back and I blushed. My little moment with Ricky was shattered when the PTB plopped a stack of contracts for me to sign. I quickly read each one, signed them, and passed them on. A schedule was handed to me for the rest of the trip, and we were sent off, given the whole day to rest.

*****

“Hey, can I have this bunk?” I asked Peanut as he walked by the rows of beds.

“Sure, I don’t have a problem, you’ll just have to check in with Ricky. He’s always been the bed dictator in a way,” he said and smiled before disappearing into the bathroom. I then went to the front of the bus to find Ricky. Alas, he was no where to be found. He couldn’t have gone far, the bus was already moving. I went back to the beds to find him laying in the bed above the one I wanted.

“oh, there you are” I said with a grin. He put down his copy of NME and looked at me.

“You were looking for me?” he asked with a sly grin on his face.

“As a matter of fact, I was. I was wondering if I could have this bunk here,” I said, patting the mattress. “Peanut said that I should as you since you run the beds around here, apparently.” Ricky grinned, knowing that he was in charge of something.

“Of course you can have that one, but as a warning, you’ll be between Nick and me.” I put on a puzzled look.

“Why are you warning me?”

“We both snore.”

“Oh, well I’m sure that won’t be too much of a problem,” I said reassuringly and smiled at him.

“Hey, c’m’ere a minute,” he said patting the spot next to him on his bed. “I wanna show you something in here.” So, I climbed up the ladder and plopped down next to him. He showed me an article about the Towers of London, and complained about how the only reason they were plastered all over NME was because pf their violent nature and “fuck you” attitude. He was really getting into it, and it made me giggle. He looked at me and grinned.

“You think this is funny?” he asked, still grinning.

“I think you’re funny.” I said and giggled again.

“Oh, you’ll pay for that!” he said and grabbed his pillow, swiftly hitting me in the head with it. I squealed and hit him playfully in the shoulder.

“So that’s how you want to play?” he said and tossed his pillow aside. He grinned evily and held his hands out in front of him, fingers wiggling.

“What are you doing?” I asked nervously as he encroached closer to me.

“Oh, you’ll see,” he said and dove for me, taking me by the waist and tickling me. I tried wriggling out from under him, but he noticed this and swung his legs around me and pinned me down. I was wiggling and giggling underneath Ricky when Peanut emerged from the bathroom.

“Oy! What are you two doing?” he exclaimed. “You know you shouldn’t be doing that here! Remember the Bus Laws man!”

“Hey,” Ricky said turning to Peanut, but keeping me pinned down. “You aren’t supposed to be doing what you just did in the bathroom per Bus Laws either!” Peanut just shook his head and walked on. Ricky turned back to me and looked down into my eyes.

“Ready for round two?” he asked and smiled. I was still panting from the first round, and I managed to squeak out a “please no”.

“Fine,” he said, “I’ll have mercy on your soul.” He started to straighten himself up when the bus hit a bump and he hit his head on the ceiling. He came crashing back down, legs straightened out behind him, and flat on top of me with his head to the side of mine. He raised his head, grunting, and looked not too far away into my eyes. His cool twinkling blue eyes bore a hole straight into mine and we smiled. He moved his head close to mine, and I moved in a little closer too. Ricky looked down to my lips, back into my eyes, and kissed me so passionately that my head rested back on the bed. When he finally pulled away, I was blushing and giggling like a raving lunatic.

Our miniature love-in was quickly ended when Simon walked by. He saw Ricky on top of someone, and took it as the perfect opportunity to foil whatever was going on. He crept up the ladder without either of us noticing, somehow, and jumped parallel on top of Ricky’s waist, creating a pig pile on little ol’ me.

“Shit man, what was that for?” Ricky asked with his face smushed into bed. Simon was laughing like a lunatic and refused to give a reason. Meanwhile, I was underneath all the hooplah, trying to keep breathing.

“Hey, did you guys forget I was under here?” I choked out and Simon muffled his laughing long enough to squeak out a “sorry” and roll off Ricky, straight onto the floor. Ricky climbed off me and peeked over the edge to see if Simon was alright. Simon got up, brushed himself off, and continued to the kitchen, chuckling to himself. Ricky turned to me just as I was readjusting myself from being smushed.

“Are you ok?” he asked as he crawled back over to me.

“Yeah, I’m fine. Me and the girls were just getting kinda smashed under all that.” Ricky gave me a puzzled look.

“The girls?” he said and I laughed. I pointed down at my chest and Ricky went “ooh,” and smiled.

“Maybe I can meet these friends of yours one day,” he said and kissed me again.

“Maybe, if you’re lucky.”

“Well, we are going to be in Las Vegas in a month. But I don’t think I can wait that long!” he said and dramatically fell back on the bed. I giggled, but before anything else could happen, my cell phone rang.

*****

By the time I got out of the bathroom from being on the phone, Nick and Peanut were in the kitchen making “dinner”. I should actually say that they were attempting to make pasta without all the water sloshing out whenever the bus hit a bump. The two of them had on stripey aprons and were running around the little kitchen. I stood back and watched, occasionally laughing whenever one of them messed up.

“Hey, if it’s so funny, why don’t you come in here and do this!” Nick said and covered the sauce pan.

“No, I’ll let you guys do it.” I said. A timer went off, Peanut shut it off and Nick turned off the burner under the pasta. I watched him lift the pan, bring it to the stove and drain it. Just as he was setting it down on the little counter, the bus hit the biggest bump I ever felt. Nick went flying up, with the pasta, and landed back on the floor. However, when his feet hit, they slipped out from under him and he landed on the floor. As you guessed it, the pot of pasta went flying in the air, and came crashing back down on his head. Peanut dropped his spoon where it was and went rushing to Nick, as did I.

“Are you ok man?” Peanut said, sliding to his knees next to the drummer. Apparently, the pot had only hit his shoulder and fell on the floor, but the pasta decided to land squarely on his head.

“Yeah, I think I’m ok. My shoulder is probable bruised, but otherwise I’m ok.” I started picking the pasta off of him and put it in the pot.

“The main problem I think right now,” Simon said appearing at the back of the room, with the rest of the bus, “is what we are going to have for dinner.” Everyone stood there thinking, and occasionally putting pasta off Nick into the pot.

“Hey, there’s this restaurant two exits away that has really good food. It’s a Vietnamese place, we could stop there. The bus driver just told me, so don’t go thinking I’m psychic or something,” Whitey said, and my mouth dropped open.

“What? I said I’m not psychic.”

“Oh,” I said realizing that I was kneeling there with my mouth agape, “It’s just that I’ve never heard you say anything before.” I smiled and the whole band laughed.

“That’s the way that most people react when they hear him for the first time”, Nick said, still picking pasta off him.

“Well hey, if this restaurant is only two exits away, go tell the driver!” Peanut said and Whitey dashed off to the front of the bus. Simon walked over to Nick, picked a noodle off his shoulder, and helped him up. I walked over to the counter to get some paper towels to wipe up the floor. As I walked back to the center of the kitchen, I slipped on a noodle and started to fall backwards. Luckily, Nick turned around at the right moment and reached out to catch my fall. We were in end-of-the-limbo position, with a piece of noodle dangling from his head. I reached up, picked off the noodle and wiggled it in his face. He laughed and propped me up. I tossed the noodle into the pot and got on my knees to wipe up the floor. If I wanted to, I could have kissed Nick then and there. However, that wouldn’t have been fair to Ricky. I could feel him watching me the whole time Nick was breaking my fall, and I knew it wasn’t sitting right with him. This was why when Ricky knelled next to me on the floor, I turned the flirt on full blast. We were throwing noodles at each other, trying to knock each other onto the floor. A few minutes later, we felt the bus come to a stop and the bus driver yelled “All of you that wanna eat, get the hell out of the bus!”

Pirates!

Rating: PG-13 for a couple not-suitable-for-kids things.
Summary: A day trip to the Pirate Museum in Salem, MA yeilds some pretty interesting events.

We had been standing in line for the Pirate Museum for what seemed like an eternity. We thought that mid-day on a Friday would be perfect for seeing a museum. We actually sat down and figured out what day would yield the least amount of people at the museum.

However, we managed to miscalculate how many people would be in the museum to an intense proportion. There were hordes of school children on fieldtrips, chaperoned by entire families and uptight schoolteachers. Their little hands were everywhere, touching everything. Now, I was never exactly a big fan of children, and it was a known fact among my circle of acquaintances. Needless to say, I was a bit uncomfortable, and I think Colin picked up on it. As the thousandth child of the day ran by my legs, yelling, I started to crack.

“Hey,” he said smoothing my hair. “Don’t worry about it. I saw people more our age back a little bit. There is a class between us and them; we can just let them go ahead of us. It’ll be ok, I promise.” He smiled at me, and I tried to smile back.

“Yeah, ok.” When we got to the reception desk, Colin explained our “predicament”. The man nodded, and called the teacher over. He told them they were going in next, and she clapped her hands in joy. The class was ushered ahead, and we were pushed back with a group of older people.

“See? I told you that it would be ok,” he turned to face me, and put his hand on my cheek. He softly kissed me on the lips, and smiled. We waited in line for another thirty minutes before being let inside the first door. I couldn’t wait to get inside mainly because I hadn’t been inside since I was in the sixth grade. Colin, on the other hand, was absolutely beside himself. He had never heard of such a museum, and when I suggested coming all the way out here, to my home town, from Portland, he jumped at the idea. I was a little surprised that he would want to come all the way out here for a little day trip to a museum; however, it was about pirates, so in the end, it wasn’t such a shock.

I remembered every little thing that made you jump, and I was debating whether to tell Colin or not. Before I got to tell him about the first little scare, it happened. The main tour guide jumped out from behind something, and scared everyone in the room, including Colin a little. I put a hand on his shoulder, and he smiled at me.

“I wasn’t scared,” he whispered to me, smiling sheepishly. The guide went through his usual load of pirate jokes before leading us through the tour. The whole time, Coin was grinning like a fool, absolutely loving every little display and cheesy movement or pun made by the guide. We held hands all the while, and whenever he would get that distinctive twinkle in his eye, I couldn’t help but lovingly kiss him on the cheek. He would only take his eyes off the guide long enough to smile at me, then direct his gaze right back. I didn’t mind, though, I knew he was as happy as a kid in a candy store. So, I let him go on in his happy little world.

At the end of the tour, we all were led off to “the tunnels” of the museum: a maze, so to speak, of “underground tunnels” with Pirate mannequins around every corner, and a few scares. We decided to hold back to the end of the group so we could go through these tunnels at our own pace. Colin was pointing out everything that he knew the story of, and boy was it a lot. At one point, we had stopped so much that we were quite a ways behind the rest of the group. We had both apparently realized this at the same time, and turned to face each other. He reached up and put his hand behind my neck, then leaned in and kissed me. When he pulled away, I pulled him back. We stood there, in front of a cove filled with buried treasure, kissing for a little while. I let his hands wander around me; it was apparent that he was a b ut on the excited side due to all the pirates and nautical things. His hand had managed to make its way up the front of my shirt, on the inside, when we heard people coming.

“Colin, there are people coming,” I managed to say in between kisses. He didn’t seem to care. He started kissing my neck, and moved his hand to my back. I decided to give in, temporarily forgetting about the prospect of people coming down the tunnels. Suddenly, the sound of giggling children was heard right behind us. Colin stopped kissing me, and turned to the group of little kids. He took his hand out from under my shirt, and swiftly made a hook out of his fingers, shaking it in their faces.

“AARRRR!!!” he yelled at the children. They screamed, and ran away, down the tunnel. We laughed, and turned back to each other.

“You know,” I said, “where there are children, there are adults, and I really don’t think that they can be easily scared away by a finger ‘hook’ and a stream of ‘aarrrr’.” We laughed, and he nodded.

“Well, I guess we should get over to the gift shop then.” We held hands, walking through the rest of the tunnels. I some how managed to forget about the big surprise at the end, and Colin didn’t know that it even existed. So, when we reached the infamous treasure chest on the right, and it slammed closed by a skeleton pirate, we nearly wet ourselves.

“Why didn’t you tell me about that?!” he exclaimed once we were past it.

“I completely forgot it existed,” I said in between nervous chuckles. He eventually started laughing, too, as we reached the exit. The gift shop was relatively empty, filled with only the people who were on the tour the same time as us. We passed the cheesy plastic doubloons, the fake earrings, and the plastic rings to the real looking, and the real expensive, items. Colin and I both bought an eye patch and a big pirate hat. We put them on the instant they were purchased. I also bought a model pirate ship kit, and Colin a sword. We walked out of the store into the bright Salem sunlight, dressed as Pirates, and talking like them, too.

“What say yee,” Colin said, “to a bit of aye-ce cream?” I laughed, and then put on my meanest pirate face.

“Aye, we shall eat of the ice cream, then, and only then, shall we pillage, the house of seven gables!” we smiled in a pirate manner, took hands, and walked over to the ice cream stand across the way. I could only imagine what could happen inside the secret staircase in the house of seven gables.

Summary: You meet Colin at an accoustuic gig in Portland, OR.

All through “Rushmore Ruffians”, Colin was busily shuffling around the kitchen, apparently not only making tea. By the end of the song, he was making his way over to the table with a tray containing a teapot, two cups, and some biscuits. You smiled at one another, and he set the tray down on the table.

“Milk or sugar?” he asked as he poured out a cup of hot tea.

“No thank you, I like it black.”

“Fine, more sugar for me.” He put a cube in his own cup and sat down next to you. You both sipped at your tea, listening to Morissey’s painful release in his music. He slipped his arm around your shoulders and you leaned on the dip of his shoulder. The biscuits on the tray were looking more and more appetizing to you, but there was no way that you wanted to move from where you were. However, you were jostled out of your dream spot by the ringing of his phone. He let out a disgruntled sigh and got up to answer it.

“I don’t know who would be calling me,” he said on his way to the phone. You reached down to get a biscuit and secretly hoped nothing was wrong. You weren’t sure, however, if it was because you didn’t want something bad to happen to him, or if you wanted to keep him here, to yourself. You could hear him laughing in the other room, and something that sounded like a command to go to bed. He laughed again and hung up the phone. You heard him walk back into the room, where he stopped at the entrance. You looked up at him and he was just standing there, with his hands on his hips. He smiled at you seductively, and you did it back. He chuckled and walked over to the couch.

He sat back down and put his arm back around you. You were still nibbling on your biscuit when Colin reached over and took it out of your hands. You let out a little noise of protest and he popped it into his mouth. He smiled at you to show that he was only joking and you smiled back as if to say that you knew all along.

He crossed his legs and put his right hand across them and onto your left thigh-knee area. You turned to look at him and slowly moved in to kiss. Your lips met again, neither of you knowing how many times you had already done this.

When you pulled apart, you smiled again, and unfortunately the record clicked off. He sighed and got up to turn over the record.

“This is the one thing that I never quite likes about vinyl. Sides aside, if you’ll excuse the pun, nothing beats vinyl,” he said and put the needle down on side two. He stood in front of the record player for a few seconds, stretching. You couldn’t help but smile; he was getting cuter and cuter as time went on. When he turned back to face you, grinning like the cat that ate the canary, you knew you wanted to get closer to him; literally and metaphorically.

“You know,” you said taking another sip of your tea, “I’ve never felt this way about anyone before. I mean, you’re adorable for sure. But, you have this thing about you that none of my previous boyfriends have had; you’re sweet, sensitive, and above all you’re eloquent. I’ve never been involved with anyone like that before.” Colin thought about this for a second, then walked over to your spot on the couch. He extended his hand out to you, and you took it. He pulled you to a standing position, leaving only an inch or two between your bodies.

“Nobody has ever said that before. Seriously, none of my girlfriends have ever been the slightest bit appreciative of my verbal prowess. You’re certainly something I’ve never had contact with before.”

“What kind of contact do you mean?” you asked with fake confusion. He only smiled and kissed you again, albeit more passionately than previous times.

“That kind of contact.” He said and stroked your hair. You made out with him for a while, just standing there, with Morrissey pouring his soul out still through the stereo.

“Let’s get out of this stuffy living room,” he said, taking your hand and leading you through the living room and up to the drape at the far end. He parted it with one sweep of his hand, revealing a door, presumably leading to a bathroom, and what appeared to be a bedroom. He led you into the bedroom and sat you down on his bed. Before you started kissing again, you took a few seconds to look around the room. The walls were covered with beautiful paintings of seascapes, lighthouses, ships, and a few portraits of unknown subjects that looked like they were from the late 1800s.

As you were kissing, again, you let Colin’s hands wander. He ran his fingers up and down your torso, occasionally sliding down your legs. He took a hold of your chest a few times, but you didn’t brush him away; this was something that you knew you wanted to do. He stopped kissing you at one point and you two were just looking at each other for a little while. You then started unbuttoning your shirt, and he did the same. He started kissing you again, letting his hands wander. You decided to get in on the hand-wandering game as well, letting yourself start to undo the fly on his pants. As one could have guessed, he started doing the same to you.

The two of you lay down in his bed, wrapped in each other’s arms, making time the best way you could.

We Both Go Down Together - Pt 1

Rating: PG-13 ish. It's reall not that bad, a few cases of not-so-children-friendly content.
Summary: You meet Colin at an accoustuic gig in Portland, OR.

It was a cold rainy day in Portland Oregon – would you expect anything else? You were walking down the crowded street trying to find something to do with your night that wouldn’t cost an arm and a leg. It was even harder than it sounds because it was right during prime “ooh it sure is nice out, lets have a walk down the street” time and the street was teeming with people. A bumped shoulder here, a stepped-on foot there, and it was starting to irritate you. You swore that the next little coffee shop or club type thing you saw, you were going to duck into it and take the time to figure out where to go.

Suddenly, as if the god of hip, inexpensive nightspots had heard your meek little cry for help, a little coffee house appeared to your right. You ducked inside and let your eyes adjust to the light. It was a small little place with hipster people at every table, sipping hot drinks, talking, and eating vegan munchies. You also noticed that there was a small stage at one end of the room with an acoustic guitar set up, and an empty table directly in front of it.

One of the manager/waiter people came up to you and asked if you wanted a seat. You nodded your head and he took you to the seat directly in front of the stage.

“This WAS reserved for someone, but he just called in not five minutes ago to say that something came up and he couldn’t come. My, what a luck person you are,” the man said, handed you a menu and said he’d be back in a few minutes to take your order. Before you looked at the menu, you looked around the stage to get any sign of who was to be playing. You didn’t have to look far because there was a sign perched on the stool directly in front of you that said “Tonight 7-9: Colin Meloy.” There were other names listed after Colin for later times, but your mind was pre-occupied. You knew that name from somewhere, you were sure of it. However, the name wasn’t coming to you. Perhaps it was the lack of caffeine in your system. You looked over the menu and decided that you wanted a chai black tea and a hummus plate. The waiter came over, took your order and your menu, and went away. After a few minutes, he came back with your tea and said the hummus would be out shortly.

Before you could even begin to cool of your tea, a man walked on stage. The whole place erupted into applause and that was when you remembered that name. Your room mate in college had tried to show you her new Decemberists cd, but she had picked the wrong time. You had just broken up with your boyfriend of 2 years, and the last thing you wanted was to be pestered to throw all your attention into this new band. Ordinarily, you would have dove in head-first, but that time you were too busy getting your face acquainted with your pillow. Months later, you saw the video for “Sixteen Military Wives” on Fuse and became intrigued with the band. This intrigue was short-lived, however, since school tuition came before cds and concert tickets.

Now, however, you were sitting no less than fifteen feet away from the lead singer of a band that entranced you so long ago, yet slipped from your memory. He picked up his guitar, tuned it a little, and meekly said hello. He started strumming his guitar and began the intro to a Syd Barret song you had temporarily forgotten the name of. When you saw the video for “Sixteen Military Wives” all that time ago, you were more interested in the little quirks and subtle humor of the video, rather than the appearance of the members. Conversely, how that you were this close to Colin, without any other distractions, you realized how nice he looked. Sure, he was a little bigger that all the other indie boys you went after in the past, but Colin had a certain something. Maybe it was his eloquence in his lyrics, or the way he pronounced his words like a captain at the helm of his ship, there was definitely something there that kept your attention.

You sipped your tea and intently watched Colin mouth every syllable in his songs. He must have picked up on this, because he started looking at you every other verse. By his fifth song, you had your hummus in front of you and were a little more focused on making sure your food reached your mouth. You were so hungry that you were afraid of looking too ravenous in front of Colin. So afraid that during a very sentimental part of a Smiths song, you brought the pita, filled with hummus and feta cheese, to your mouth and it didn’t quite make it there in one piece. Right over your lap, a good portion of the pita, and its contents, decided to make your lap its new home. You frowned at the mess you just made and picked up your napkin to wipe it up. However, you were cut short by the sound of a muffled giggle. You looked up to find Colin attempting, in vain however, to suppress laughter and keep the song going. He looked right at you and smiled. If this was anyone else, you would have gotten angry at a mocking laughter. However, you could tell by looking into his eyes, past his cute little geek glasses, that it was a sympathetic, “we’ll look back at this when we’re sixty and laugh” type of laughter. You gave back a bashful smile and continued to clean up your mess. He finished the song and looked right at you and smiled. He then walked over to the microphone.

“This next song is for a certain lady here tonight that seems to need a little help,” he said and gave you a sly grin. He then proceeded to play “Oceanside” by the Decemberists. Unbeknownst to him, this was your absolute favorite Decemberists song that, as previously mentioned, had been forgotten. You finished cleaning yourself up and focused your attention back to Colin. For the remainder of his set, you only nibbled at your food, opting to intently watching the charming man onstage.

At nine o’clock, Colin said his final thank you’s and took his guitar offstage. You were right there with the rest of the club, on your feet cheering. He didn’t come back out for an encore, though, so you sat back down to a surprise second cup of tea. No sooner had you started digging into your food again did you feel a tap on your shoulder. You threw up the “just a second” finger, finished swallowing, wiped out mouth, and turned around. “Is this seat taken?” Colin asked and pointed to the empty chair across from you.

“No, of course not,” you said, some how managing to keep it in all English. He sat down and a waiter promptly came over to take his order. He ordered a black tea, one sugar. When the waiter left, he looked right into your eyes and smiled. You smiled back, of course and proceeded to lay on the charm.

“You were great up there. I thought I was the only one that liked ‘Golden Hair’ by Syd Barret!”

“Small world,” he said smiling. “I assume you know my name, but I haven’t had the pleasure of knowing yours.” You grinned slightly and told him your name.

“My, what a beautiful name,” he said taking your hand in his and kissing it, “and such a beautiful lady.” Even in the dark coffee house, you knew he could see you blushing, which might explain his chuckling.

The waiter walked back over and placed Colin’s tea down next to where he had just let go of your hand. He thanked the waiter and turned back to you.

“So,” Colin said blowing across his tea to cool it down, “what brings you to this little club? I’ve been playing here almost every Friday night for three months and this is the first time I’ve seen you here.”

“Well, this is the first time I’ve been in here. I was looking for some place to go tonight, and I actually initially stepped in here to get out of the crowded street and think for a minute,” you said then looked right into Colin’s eyes. “But something was telling me to stay here and check it out, and I’m glad I did.” Now it was Colin’s turn to get bashful. He grinned modestly and looked down into his tea.

“You know,” he said spinning his finger around the lip of the tea cup, “I don’t usually do this, but do you want to go for a walk downtown? The streetlights look very lovely in this kind of weather.” He looked up at you with the look of a child asking his mother to go out and play in the mud.

“Yeah, that would be really nice,” you replied and Colin called the waiter over.

“Take all this out of my pay; I’ll come pick it up tomorrow.” You turned to Colin with a protesting expression.

“No, you don’t have to do that!” you said but Colin put of his hand persistently.

“Yes, I know I don’t have to, but I WANT to,” he quickly finished his tea, the waiter walked away. Colin got up out of his chair, and as you went to follow suit he held out his hand again.

“I’m going to get my guitar, and then I’ll come back and get you like a gentleman.” You watched him slip backstage and reemerge a minute later with a tortoise shell guitar case and wearing a cute little suede jacket with faux fur lining showing on the collar. He walked over to the table and you stood up as he pulled out your chair for you, then took your hand, pushed in your chair and he led you away into the night.

Colin led you to his car; he put the guitar in the trunk, and then held out his arm for you to take. You gladly obliged and the two of you walked down the almost empty street. There was a thin layer of fog on the ground and you were thinking that this is the most romantic treatment you have ever received.

“You were right; these streetlights give the street the coolest atmosphere. You know what I mean; they make it just gloomy enough that it’s romantic. Do you know what I mean?” you asked and turned to Colin. Oh no, you thought, I made a complete fool of myself. He stopped walking and turned to face you.

“Yes, I know exactly what you mean; this is why I wanted to take you on this walk. I wanted to see if you would see what I see in it.”

“Oh I do,” you said. “I’m just so glad that you see that I see what you see in these lights... I think,” you said, all afraid that you had made yet another fool of yourself.

“Oh just shut up and kiss me,” Colin said and the two of you were pulled close together, embraced in one of the most romantic, and best, moments of your life. When you finally pulled apart, the two of you smiled at each other and kissed again. When you pulled apart, again, Colin grinned ear to ear and you two started walking again. This time, though, Colin had his arm around your waist, and you likewise.

“So, where to now?” you asked Colin as you turned onto a little side street.

“Well, I was wondering if you wanted to come back to my place, we can listen to records, I’ll make you some of my famous tea?” He gave you that little kid in the mud look again. Of course you agreed; who could resist that look?

So you turned around and started walking back towards the club and Colin’s car. There was an old man sitting on his stoop, a man you two somehow managed to miss the first time around, selling hand-carved wooden roses. While you were wondering why he was still there so late, Colin had a different idea.

“Wait right here,” he said to you and walked up the old man’s stoop. You couldn’t hear what they were saying, but Colin reached into his pocket, pulled out some money, and the man handed him a rose. Colin bounded down the stairs, grinning wider than when you first kissed, and handed you the rose. You smiled equally as wide and took it from him, kissing him again. Colin took your hand and walked you to his car.

When you got inside his car, and it was turned on, “The Crane Wife Part 3” was playing from the cd player. He quickly reached over and turned it off, blushing profusely.

“What’s wrong?” you asked nonplus.

“Oh, nothing, I just get a little embarrassed when people come in my car and they find out that I listen to myself. I’m afraid people will think I’m vain or something.” You reached over and stroked his shoulder.

“It’s ok, I think it’s cute. Plus, I love that song, so I’m willing to listen to it if you want to,” you smiled and you could tell it made Colin feel better.

“Ok,” he said and turned the cd back on. You were quietly singing along as Colin drove through the city to his house. After a song or two, you noticed Colin was singing along too. You smiled and said “Does it ever weird you out to sing along with yourself?” He chucked and responded, “Not really; I have to sing with myself sometimes in the studio, and so even if it did weird me out, I’m used to it by now.”

“That’s interesting. I know that if I made an album I would feel weird singing with myself,” you laughed and looked back out the window at the passing scenery. You noticed that he drove MUCH nicer than all your previous boyfriends. Even the face that he stopped at a stop sign was an improvement from all the others.

Fifteen minutes later, Colin pulled into a parking spot under a big building that looked like a warehouse.

“I know what you’re thinking,” he said turning off the car, “I don’t like to flaunt any extra money I might have. Plus, it’s a loft apartment, which is something I’ve always been fascinated with.”

“Really? Me too!” you exclaimed and unbuckled. Colin opened his door, and just as soon as you touched the door handle, Colin condemned “Don’t even think about opening that door.” You were taken aback and put your hands back in your lap. Colin rushed over to your door and opened it for you.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you or anything; I just like to open the door for my girlfriend, that’s all.” You smiled and took his outstretched hand and he helped you out.

“That’s ok, I think it’s sweet.” Colin led you through the main door, up the stairs and to the door of his apartment.

“Hold on a sec, I have to de-activate the alarm,” he unlocked the door, and when he opened it you could hear the beeping of an alarm, then the off-tempo beeping of his shutting it off. He opened the door back up and ushered you inside. The whole apartment was everything you had imagined it would be: one big room, a small kitchen with an even smaller table, a few couches, a TV, a massive record and cd collection, and a large Japanese tapestry that ostensibly hid the bathroom and bedroom (you were secretly hoping to solidify this assumption).

“Pick a record, any record,” Colin said taking off his coat and setting down his guitar. You wandered over to the records trying to not only decide what to play, but first what to look for, then decide. You finally chose “Meat is Murder” by the Smiths and handed it over to Colin.

“Ah, one of my favorites,” he said and turned on the stereo.

“Me too,” you replied, “That’s why I chose it.” He put the record on and announced that he was going to make tea and that you should make yourself comfortable. You flopped down on one of the couches and laid your head back on the cushions. This was so surreal for you it was almost overwhelming. Here you are, a simple little indie girl from Portland, Oregon, sitting in Colon Meloy’s apartment while he makes you tea and listening to The Smiths. If only you knew then how much better the night was going to get.
